The Sacrament of Holy Orders is a sacrament instituted by Christ. Through this sacrament, men are consecrated for the service of God and His Church. They are configured to Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to act in persona Christi Capitis—in the person of Christ the Head. This is evident especially in preaching, pastoral ministry, and the celebration of the sacraments.
The principal rites of ordination include the laying on of hands, the Prayer of Consecration, investiture with sacred vestments, anointing with chrism (for priests and bishops), and the sign of peace.
Holy Orders leaves an indelible spiritual character on the recipient; therefore, it cannot be repeated. Ultimately, ordination is not merely the conferral of an ecclesiastical position but a permanent sacramental vocation to serve Christ and His people and to continue Christ’s mission in the Church.
