Catechesis in the Life of the Church

Catechesis is the Church’s sacred work of handing on the faith so that children, young people, and adults may come to know Christ, believe in Him, follow Him, and live fully as members of His Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes catechesis as “education in the faith,” especially the teaching of Christian doctrine in an “organic and systematic way,” with the purpose of initiating believers into the fullness of Christian life (CCC, 5). It is therefore not merely religious instruction, but a formation of the whole person in the Word of God, the sacraments, prayer, moral life, and active participation in the life and mission of the Church.

In the Catholic Diocese of Orlu, catechesis belongs to the heart of the Church’s pastoral mission. As chief teacher of the faith in the Diocese, the Bishop has the primary responsibility of ensuring that the people of God are formed in sound doctrine, authentic Catholic life, and faithful witness to the Gospel. Priests share in this teaching office by preaching, instructing, preparing the faithful for the sacraments, and guiding parish communities in the truth of the faith. Through parish catechetical programs, sacramental preparation, youth and adult faith formation, and ongoing Christian instruction, the Diocese seeks to nurture a people who know their faith, love the Church, and live as disciples of Christ in their families and communities. This reflects the Church’s teaching that catechesis is ordered toward making disciples, educating people in the life of Christ, and building up the Body of Christ (Catechesi Tradendae, 1).

Catechists share in this mission in a special way. By virtue of their baptism and through the apostolate and formation they receive from the Church, catechists assist pastors in teaching, explaining, and witnessing to the Catholic faith. Vatican II teaches that the apostolate belongs to all the faithful because of their union with Christ in baptism, while Pope Francis reminds the Church that the ministry of the catechist is an ancient and necessary service for the growth of the Christian community (Apostolicam Actuositatem, 3; Antiquum Ministerium, 1). Their service is both a ministry of instruction and a ministry of example, helping the faithful encounter Christ, understand the teachings of the Church, prepare worthily for the sacraments, and grow in mature Christian life. In this way, catechists in Orlu Diocese remain vital collaborators in the Church’s mission of forming the people of God and passing on the faith from one generation to the next.
