Mary League Girls Embrace Skill Acquisition as Path to Purposeful Living

Members of the Orlu Diocesan Mary League Girls gathered on today, 11th July 2026, for a meeting that placed skill acquisition and purposeful Christian living at the heart of its discussion. The session, opened in the customary spirit of the League with prayer and greetings to the clergy, drew members into a candid conversation about what it truly means for a Nigerian youth to be prepared for life.
Speaking on the theme, members agreed that a young Nigerian, whether educated or not, cannot be said to be serious about life without a marketable skill. The meeting urged members not to be content with acquiring just one skill, but to pursue two, three, or more, equipping themselves broadly for the uncertainties of today’s economy. Beyond livelihood, members were reminded that every skill must be anchored in a deeper purpose: to serve God in truth and in spirit, and to know the right things to do and to do them well.
The discussion drew richly from the League’s recent retreat, held at the Sacred Heart Pastoral Centre, Orlu, from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th May. There, the Retreat Moderator, Rev. Fr. Ephraim Ebere, had explained that education combined with a practical skill enables a person to live with dignity and comfort, while also serving as a powerful check on social vices such as stealing, killing, robbery, and corruption. Fr. Ephraim’s words continued to resonate with members: that no knowledge is ever wasted, and that every opportunity to learn something new should be seized without hesitation, for it may not come again.
Putting this teaching into practice, today’s meeting featured a hands-on session on the production of bleach and multi-purpose liquid soap. Members were taken step by step through the chemicals required and the production process involved, giving them a tangible, income-generating skill they can put to immediate use in their homes and communities.
The meeting closed with a renewed call to members to take seriously the twin task of self-development and spiritual fidelity, living out the League’s ideals of Marian devotion, discipline, and service, while building the practical competence needed to thrive as young Catholic women in today’s Nigeria.
