Bishop Ukwuoma Dedicates Church of Immaculate Conception, Umuchima
April 10 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Today, April 10, 2026, the Catholic Bishop of Orlu, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma, solemnly dedicated the Church of Immaculate Conception, Umuchima.
The parish priest, Fr. Donatus Dozie, together with parishioners, welcomed the bishop with joy and reverence as the faithful gathered for the historic celebration.
The dedication began with the Rite of Entrance at the door of the church. During the rite, Bishop Ukwuoma prayed the prescribed prayers and struck the church door three times with his crozier, signifying the formal opening of the sacred edifice. Representatives of the parish then handed over the church to the bishop, who blessed the people and the building.
In his homily, Bishop Ukwuoma recalled with gratitude the pioneers of the Catholic faith in Umuchima, noting that the seed they planted has now blossomed into a magnificent church. He said the dedication of a temple dates back to the time of King David and King Solomon, and that once a church is dedicated to God, it becomes a sacred place of encounter with him โ not an ordinary hall, but a true house of prayer.
The bishop reminded the faithful that, just as the church building is dedicated to God, they also are called to become living temples. He urged them to renounce old ways and embrace a new life in Christ, marked by peace, love and unity.
After the homily, the Litany of the Saints was sung, followed by the Prayer of Dedication. Bishop Ukwuoma then anointed the altar and the walls of the church with Sacred Chrism. Incense was burned on the altar, and the church and congregation were incensed. The altar was then clothed, and candles were lit, symbolizing Christ as the Light of the World.
After Holy Communion, Bishop Ukwuoma, accompanied by concelebrating priests carrying lighted candles, solemnly reposed the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle and invoked Godโs blessings upon the faithful.
In his remarks, the bishop expressed deep appreciation to Fr. Dozie and the parishioners for their faith, commitment and sacrifices, which led to the successful completion of the church project.
Fr. Dozie, in his vote of thanks, praised God for his abundant blessings and thanked the bishop for his fatherly presence. He also commended the parishioners for their unwavering support. Fr. Theo Madu thanked friends and families who contributed to the success of the dedication.
The Parish Pastoral Council chairman, Barr. Joseph Onyenakazi, welcomed guests and thanked God for the achievement, noting that it was made possible not only through human effort but also through divine assistance.
The celebration concluded with the bishopโs final blessing, a photo session and a reception for guests.
