Custos Ecclesiae Seminary
Custos Ecclesiae Seminary
Custos Ecclesiae Seminary, Uzii is a diocesan seminary of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu dedicated to the formation of young men discerning the call to the priesthood. The seminary provides an environment of prayer, discipline, study, character formation, and vocational discernment, helping students grow in faith and prepare for future service to the Church.

The formation at Custos Ecclesiae Seminary typically serves as a one-year propaedeutic stage after secondary school or junior seminary. During this period, students are introduced more deeply to prayer, community life, spiritual direction, human formation, and the basic habits needed for further seminary training. This stage helps them clarify their vocation and prepare for the next phase of priestly formation.
In essence, Custos Ecclesiae Seminary Uzii is a catholic spiritual-year seminary established as a response to the appeal of the second Vatican council fathers that “…it will rest with the Bishops to set apart a suitable interval of time for a more intensive spiritual preparation…” (Cf. Vatican II, Optatam totius, no. 12). Since its inception, the seminary has remained a place of one year thorough spiritual program, a seed bed where the piety of the seminarians is watered, nourished and strengthened before their philosophical studies/Major seminary studies.
Foundation and Establishment
The history of Custos Ecclesiae Seminary began in October 1992 when the Spiritual Year programme found a permanent home at Uzii in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. Placed under the patronage of St. Joseph, Custos Ecclesiae (Guardian of the Church), the seminary was formally inaugurated on 15 January 1993 by the pioneer Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu, His Lordship, Most Rev. Gregory Obinna Ochiagha (of blessed memory).
The seminary commenced with twenty-one seminarians under the pioneering leadership of Late Msgr. Cyriacus S. Mba as Rector, assisted by Rev. Fr. Benson C. O. C. Okpara as Bursar and Rev. Fr. Bernard Ukwuegbu as Dean. From these humble beginnings, the institution steadily grew into a renowned centre of spiritual formation.
The location of the seminary at Uzii remains both providential and symbolic. The people of Uzii received the establishment of the seminary with profound gratitude and enthusiasm, generously donating land and existing structures that enabled the institution to commence operations. Their unwavering support and cooperation over the years have contributed immensely to the growth and success of the seminary. In a profound sense, the words of Christ resonate in this providential event: “You have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children” (Mt. 11:25).
Growth and Development
Since its establishment, Custos Ecclesiae Seminary, Uzii, has witnessed remarkable growth and development in both its physical infrastructure and formative mission. What began as a modest institution has evolved into a well-structured seminary committed to the spiritual and human formation of candidates for the priesthood.

In its early years, the seminary operated with limited facilities. However, through the dedication of diocesan authorities, successive formators, benefactors, and the local Christian community, substantial improvements have been made over the years. These developments include the expansion of residential facilities, extensive renovation and modernization of hostel accommodations into self-contained units, and continuous enhancement of academic and administrative structures.
A significant milestone in the seminary’s infrastructural development was the renovation of the classroom block, which was commissioned by the Bishop of Orlu Diocese, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma, on 21 June 2021. Equally noteworthy was the construction of the new main chapel, the spiritual heart of the institution, which was solemnly blessed on 17 February 2006 by Archbishop Renzo Fratini, then Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria.

The seminary has also experienced remarkable growth in the number of candidates who have passed through its programme of formation. Since its establishment, over four hundred seminarians have undergone spiritual formation at Custos Ecclesiae Seminary. Of these, more than three hundred have been ordained priests, while others continue in their formation journey or have discerned alternative vocations in accordance with God’s will.
